HAVDALLAH – Tzeitchem L'shalom:
Departing from Shabbat in Peace
We make a pilgrimage to Shabbat every week -- a pilgrimage to a place which is really only a time -- a time of holiness. Shabbat lasts 26 hours; God's name (YHVH) = 26 --- so you could say that Shabbat represents God unfolding in time. The magic of this time is the presence and activity of the Shechinah, who comes "home" from exile once a week, spends Shabbat joining God & Israel in joy before going back into lonely exile for another week.
The gift of Shabbat is unique – a different plane. Appreciating its beauty and understanding its significance means seeing it in contrast to the rest of the week. With havdallah, we mark the symbolic end of Shabbat and usher in the new week. Surrounded by stories and song, we activate all our senses: we taste the wine, smell the spices, see the flame of the candle, feel its heat, and hear the blessings.
When Shabbat ends, it is not just the clock ticking away, but the heightened awareness we have shared also coming to an end. The weekdays are not Shabbat. But, if we have experienced Shabbat in its fullness, we may be able to infuse our week with some of it’s sweetness.
Saturday evening stories and songs, leading up to havdallah and followed by a coffee-house style concert (program - 90 min.)
